A few
photographers can span the vast spectrum of photography, both artistic
and technical, with as much skill, passion and artistry as Joachim H.
Frederick.
For over 25 years his career has encompassed all aspects of photography,
from high fashion and industrial imagery to celebrity portraiture and
surrealistic fine art, maintaining throughout his exacting standards and
exceptionally gifted eye.
Born in Germany, he was trained under the rules and requirements of the
German Educational System. Later, he attended New York’s prestigious
School of Visual Arts.
He entered the world of commercial photography in 1971 and quickly
became established with high end corporate clients like BMW. His work
during this period included architectural, industrial and product
imagery, as well as photojournalism.
After a move to New York, building on his extensive experience, he
founded his own studio in 1975 and branched into high fashion
photography and corporate image creation.
His impressive client list included Bill Atkinson, Clairol, Emba Mink,
Avon Cosmetics, Diane von Fuerstenberg, Ted Lapidus, DeBeers Diamonds, Telefrance USA and The Metropolitan Opera, among many others.
Shortly after, he ventured back to Europe where he added numerous
fashion houses and corporations to his growing portfolio repertoire.
Several solo projects followed, including books such as "Golden Boys”,
"The Manual of Male Photography" and “Men on Men", which together have
sold over three quarters of a million copies world-wide.
In 1986 he moved to Los Angeles to explore the world of the
entertainment industry and commercial beauty. A long line of calendars,
cards, posters and magazine layouts followed. During this time he also
moved into the field of celebrity portraiture, producing magnificent
essays of major personalities for private commission and European
magazines such as Paris Match, Oggie, Stern, Lecturas, Time Out and many
others.
His skills in capturing the male physique also led to a position as main
contributing photographer for Muscle&Fitness Magazine, where he
developed new cover and layout concepts.
Not satisfied with merely documenting the surface of life alone, he
embarked on a soul-searching exploration of the American Southwest
Desert.
A ground breaking and emotionally stunning series of surrealistic images
resulted, combining his photographic expertise with a painters
understanding of light as an elemental force and culminating in a one
man show at the Wade Gallery in Los Angeles. His fine Art Photography
can be seen now as well in private and corporate collections.
For two years he was the Director of Photography for LPI, an
international publishing house, where he remade their overall identity
and helped to redefine their photographic styles, subsequently leading
to working again for many European publishers.
For the past few years Joachim H. Frederick has concentrated on further
expanding his creativity towards his body of fine art works, leaving the
commercial world somewhat behind, exploring the possibilities of cyber
space in an constant strive to reinvent himself and working on
individual special assignments.
Meanwhile, his ventures into the World of the Internet presented such
exciting challenges that he realized he had found a new frontier where
he could utilize all his talents, education and creativity into new
dimensions not thought possible before.
Not being tied down to a fixed location any longer and realizing that a
fast phone line connection would be sufficient, Frederick decided to
move to his beloved Desert and make Palm Springs his home and base for
his newly adopted technological enterprise.
In October 2005 Mr. Frederick diverged once again to Europe, exploring
new challenges the EU. Market has presented to his ever probing and
expanding spirit.
His amazingly varied and far-ranging skills, together with his unique
and probing outlook on life, have combined to make him one of the most
experienced, singular photographers, designers and entrepreneurs working
today. Extensive travel world-wide and intensive management training,
pooled with his artistry as a photographer, have produced; in Joachim H.
Frederick a truly gifted talent.
