THE REAL GINNY FOAT STORY OR WHAT THE DESERT SUN DOESN'T WANT YOU TO KNOW At the beginning of this campaign for Palm Springs City Council I knew I would be dealing with the story of my past publicly. I have never tried to hide my past having published a book about my life and recently consented to two interviews one with the Sun and the other with the Los Angeles Times. I assumed that would be that. I have directly answered any questions through my website or personally that have been asked. However through their own brand of slanted journalism, the Desert Sun has chosen to write about my past rather than the future of this City. I hope that you will take the time to read the true story of my life as encapsulated below. My book "Never Guilty, Never Free" with its very apt title is available at the Palm Springs Library, for sale at Celebrity Books, or through out of print online book sellers. Somewhere around 1965 in the height of the Vietnam war protests, the peace-child and hippy Era and the time when many young people were traveling the country, I met and married a man that turned out to be a monster. My life took on the tumultuousness of the times. I was battered and abused by this man until my escape from him in the early 70's. After a failed attempt on my life and his murder of another human being he was sent to prison and I thought I was finally free. I worked very hard to pull my life back together. I began a career in the hotel and catering business culminating in my owning my own catering company. I began to once again get involved in politics, the women's movement and the battle for the Equal Rights Amendment. After several years I remarried and settled into a comfortable and productive life. In 1979 I answered a knock on my door and the nightmare of this monster began again. In an effort to get a reduction in his prison sentence he accused me of two horrendous crimes of which I had no knowledge or complicity. He offered his testimony in exchange for that reduction. I was arrested and incarcerated awaiting extradition to Nevada where he claimed one of the crimes had taken place. I was extradited and held for a short period of time until the evidence was brought before a judge and thrown out of court. I returned to California, a ruined marriage and a business in shambles. I had two choices to make at that time, to remain a victim and feel sorry for myself or to repair my life and grow stronger from the experience. I chose the latter and rebuilt my business and immersed myself in community involvement. In 1981 I was elected President of California National Organization for Women and spent the next several years testifying before legislative bodies and working on issues of importance to women, children and minorities. In 1983 the nightmare began again. I was arrested and spent another couple of month's incarcerated awaiting extradition to New Orleans where he claimed I had committed another murder again seeking a reduction in his sentence. This time I was not alone. People from throughout the country mobilized around my defense. My huge bail was posted by a New Orleans doctor and monies for my defense came from all over the country. I went to trial where he on the guarantee of immunity and a recommendation for a reduced sentence testified against me. It quickly became apparent to all that were involved that he had created this accusation for his own personal gain. The jury deliberated for 45 minutes during which time they ate lunch and came back with a not guilty verdict. We all had dinner together that evening and tempered our celebration with questions of how our justice system could be used for such nefarious purposes. I returned home to California and once again picked up the pieces of my life. My path to Palm Springs has been one filled with community service, political leadership and business development. Please take a moment to review the rest of my website where you will find information on my employment and community involvement. I am now taking the next step in using the skills that I have amassed to be of service to the City I love. I appreciate your taking the time to read this and hope that you will honor me with your vote on November 4th. Ginny |
